Sister Mary Anthony, East St. Louis, IllinoisAt 84 years old, Sister Mary Anthony is still full of youth. Perhapsthat's because she works with them. Three hours a week, Sister Marytutors kindergarten students in phonics at Catholic Day Care among theimpoverished urban landscape of East St. Louis. By now she's seen morechange than a bus driver, but one thing that hasn't changed is the needfor volunteers to help the disadvantaged of society, and Sister Marycontinues to do just that.
Each Christmas, she works in the kitchen of Catholic Urban Programs, serving up her unique brand of faith and food. And every holidayseason, she sends a letter to family and friends telling of the pastyear's work and the things still to be done.
As sharp and spry as anyone could hope to be, Sister Mary staysyoung in her faith. As complicated as the world has become in herlifetime, she believes some things remain simple: the needs of peopleto receive food, clothing, education and love. As long as life for someremains hard, her decision to help remains easy.
