Since 1968 Adorers have set their feet on the mountains, hills, valleys, and plains of Guatemala. Health care, education and pastoral work have brought Adorers and Guatemalans together in their collaborative efforts toward peace and joy. At times the steps have been small, at times gigantic, but always they have steadily headed toward the well being of the Guatemalan people, especially those with the most limited economic resources.
The Country
Guatemala is located in Central America, just below Mexico, west of El Salvador and Honduras and southwest of Belize. The North Pacific Ocean is on its southern border and the Caribbean Sea is on its northeast border. More than half of Guatemalans are descendants of the Mayans. Its large cities are heavily populated with Guatemala City’s population estimated at almost 3 million, Mixco at 268,300 and Villa Nueva at 129,600 (2001 figures). Guatemala’s economy is predominantly agricultural concentrating on crops such as beans, squash and chili peppers.
