Witness for Peace in Columbia
By Ann Haubrich & Kris Schrader, ASC
September 26, 2007

Kris and Ann in Bogata Kris and Ann in Bogota, Colombia after a morning of Witness for Peace training and orientation.
Children prepare for Pan y Paz parade Tierralta children prepare for the Pan y Paz parade and celebration.

As most of you know, we just returned from a Witness for Peace emergency delegation to Colombia and ask ourselves “What would the sisters and our ASC extended family find interesting to learn about our 8-day journey and what would communicate the moving experience we found it to be?”

Prior to our trip, when we heard the word Colombia, if there wasn’t a momentary confusion in so far as it was a reference to the ASC Center in Pennsylvania or a NASA space shuttle, what sprang to mind was DRUG lord capital of the world. Now upon hearing “Colombia,” what will forever be etched in our consciousness are the faces of Janet, Julio Cesar, Rosendo and so many displaced from their homes because of the immensely complicated war which involves guerrilla movements, paramilitary forces, drug trafficking, and the national army which wages war in an attempt to control local populations and properties. The words of these victims and witnesses, “We have no hope, only faith, echoes in our hearts.”  Full story as Word Document.
